    Mario,

No, the maps are not stored in a format that works for transferring to an SD.

Hi Ashli, thanks for the reply and sorry for the cross posting with the android sd card question.

So, I am doing a 11000 km trip into Africa next week. That will be Portugal, morrocos, Mauritania, Senegal, guine bissau. Have a look: http://www.saharadesertchallenge.com

My question is, since the storage space on the devices is limited, iPad 16gb and Samsung tablet 32gb sd card (max support) and we will have routes across road and overland, what will be the best map to save offline? In terms of space and detail? I don't want to get lost neither on the city's neither on the desert. Can you give me so hints please.

    Mario,

Gaia Topo is a mobile-optimized map, so it takes up less space on your device than other maps might. I think you might be able to get the whole area you'll be traveling in 2-3 map downloads about 2GB each.

    Thanks Ashli.

Gaia Topo is the cartographic one, right?

it will show the same roads and tracks as the MapBox outdoors HD, or the MapBox streets HD.

The big diference is the image and the POIs ? am I correct?

I will give it a go.

Gaia Topo will show a lot of the same information as MapBox since they are based on the same data (openstreetmap.org).

Gaia Topo has additional POIs on the map in comparison to MapBox.

MapBox download size is also pretty reasonably in the iOS app, but there is an upper limit of 160,000 total map tiles for MapBox downloads, so you might not be able to grab the entire route.

Has anything changed in the last 2 years with being able to use the ScanDisk iXpand device to download maps to that we can pull up with no cell service?  I have an older Ipad with very little storage and I am looking for ways to avoid buying a new one but yet still have my maps downloaded so  I am not relying on cell service.

    Hi there,

No, maps are saved locally to the app and can not be saved to an SD card like this.
