Allow filtering of Public Trips

    Gabe - I like this idea and would like to take it to another level. I think another way to handle this which could have some additional functionality and benefits would be if you could "tag" each track or point with an activity like backcountry skiing, mountain biking, hiking, etc. Some tracks or POIs could have multiple tags if they were relevant for different season activities. Then you could filter by tag to determine what is displayed on your maps. Also I think most people probably write the activity in the track title or description. This way the tags would take care of that automatically.

    I agree, I asked for this feature a few years back and have wondered why it's never been pursued.

    This definitely needs to happen. Right now, the public trips overlay can be overwhelming; to the point of slowing down the map in popular areas.

    Basically, it needs to be easier to search/filter for new and interesting trips. Right now one still needs to use something like AllTrails for the search functionality.

    I'd like to add some more filtering ideas:

    * Has pictures

    * Has Notes

    * Has Comments

    * Tags/Keywords (would need to be implemented)

    * Distance

    * Ascent/Descent

    * User/difficulty rating (would need to be implemented)

    * Activity type (would need to be implemented)

    * Likes/Votes (would need to be implemented)

    I think this is addressed by the new hike search feature: https://www.gaiagps.com/hike/united-states/

    The new hike search feature synthesizes known Hikes from raw track data, which you can browse and search by location. For any known Hike, you can also view the underlying Tracks. And it shows seasonality graphs for the route, which helps plan winter stuff.

    We have a lot more work planned and in progress on search, but this is the start!

    Hmmm. Thank you for the response and it's great to see that there are more options on the way, but this new search feature does not add the functionality requested in this post. Tagging would be a way to sort and filter one's own (non-shared) saved tracks among other things. I still cannot do this. The display becomes unweildly to manage once you have many tracks overlaid in a single region.

    OK, we'll leave the issue open. I can see the desirability of filter raw tracks and also the Hikes that get synthesized from the Tracks. Besides hike search, there's a big project on gaiagps.com/map underway, and this could maybe fit into that over the coming months.

    Jumping in here as I found this thread based on searching for solutions to my dilemma...while I enjoy hiking tremendously, I am interested in other activities as well, such as your prominently featured purpose of 4x4 offroading (the reason I found GAIA in the first place). I would love to be able to filter routes tagged by a particular activity. At the moment it's incredibly difficult and inefficient to search for tracks that allow for adventure riding and offroading. Also, when looking at a region I am visiting (currently in Brandenburg, Germany), I can see many routes on the public map but if I could filter by routes that include photos or descriptions, I wouldn't have to click on routes willynilly hoping they're quality entries that are worth the effort to try, especially given limited bandwidth and/or time while traveling.

    Long story short, a major reason to use GAIA is to access the incredible trove of crowd-sourced adventures. But without a way to filter results and find quality posts for particular activities, this amazing tool becomes much more ponderous and has an inverse relationship between number of people using it and the quality of the tools.

    Andrew, can we get a peak behind the curtain on the "big project on  gaiagps.com/map [that's] underway"?

    Sammy, check out out https://www.gaiagps.com/map2/ - that's the live alpha test of the new map.

    This converts the map to use vector maps, improves the layers UX, and will lead to new features like making waypoints, and creating map downloads. I could see having filter controls here for pubic tracks.
