Travel in Southern Africa
Hi Folks,
I will be traveling in South Africa this coming summer and I have not found any info about SA on the web site regarding using GAIA in Africa. I would like to find out if GAIA would be an appropriate GPS system to use during my travels or do you have any other options that I can consider. My plan is to purchase an iPad in the next month or two for use on the trip for navigating. I would appreciate any information or suggestions from the community regarding this question.
Thanks in advance,
Graham

Hi Graham,
The app will work great in South Africa!
For your iPad purchase, make sure to get a cellular-enabled model -- the WiFi-only models do not have a GPS chip.
For maps in South Africa -- we have a lot of layers with global coverage that I think would work great. Here is a link to where you can browse Gaia Topo in South Africa: https://www.gaiagps.com/map/?layer=GaiaTopoRasterFeet&lat=-26.4706&lon=22.5879&zoom=5
On that page, you can click 'Layers' then 'Add Map Sources' to try out many others. A few suggestions to try:
- OpenHikingMap HD
- OpenLandscapeMap HD
- Satellite (the MapBox brand version)
- MapBox Outdoors (requires Premium Membership)

Are there detailed maps with 4x4 tracks, camps, etc., for all of southern Africa; SA, Bots, Nam, Zim, Zam, Malawai, et. al.?? If so, what layer would they be on??
Many thanks,
