It's been four months since the last comment from GaiaGPS, what's the status of GaiaGPS and Apple CarPlay?

I'll agree with codecat that software feature build and roll outs rarely stay on schedule and that it's better not to promise a date.  That said, many of us are both loyal customers and professional software engineers.  Some level of detail on the issues encountered by the Gaia dev team might prompt (free) solution suggestions that could un-block them.  I ended up here today looking for CarPlay support to help me decide on a new head unit purchase - the lack of it means I either change my plans or continue using Gaia on a small phone screen.  Much like the APRS integration that people have long hoped for, if your competitors can do CarPlay it will cost Gaia some percentage of the overland market.

i'm gonna guess here, but it's a good guess. someone looked at what amount of revenue this would bring in above and beyond what is already there, and what it would cost to develop, and factored in the endless upgrades that are necessary to keep up with apple's perfidious interface people, and said screw it.

i got a cheeseburger that says that nobody on here will cancel their $25 a year pro membership over this.

and if they aren't on here following this, they probably don't care one way or the other. so.... will it cost them 500

    customers? that is $12,500. meh.

i've come to the conclusion i'll run the jeep mapset on the jeep, and put this on a ipad on a form 67 mount on the dash, and go drive it.

but the stereo integration? i have a '18 rubicon with premium sound. i have a bose set of headsets. the jeep interface and sound quality suck enough i don't even bother pairing my iphone with it any more.

if i want a decent quality sound experience with this, i pair two pairs of bose headphones to the iphone, and my wife and i have sound cancelling of the tires, and music off the phone. if we want separate sound, she pairs to her phone and i to mine.

and if we wanted to talk to each other over that, i could just call her.

so, at this point, i don't see this happening ever. they have a captive market, and no real competition.

“Captive market, and no real competition” That’s what countless other companies that are now dead or dying thought too.

and... maybe they will go broke as well, but that doesn't change anything in their decision process. it's abundantly clear they aren't going to do it, and nothing anyone here says will make a difference.

@Fulthrotl I dont know how we go about with this cheeseburger exchange but I cancelled my pro subscription for exactly this reason when we discussed it 4 months ago in this very thread.  Executed a few trips since using other apps and made it work.  I'd still come back to Gaia if this feature was made available, but it seems that this is more of an indicator that Gaia doesn't listen to those paying customers generally.  They are asking for more buy-in by changing the pricing model to only be able to buy a year of pro at a time, not a month at a time- so I say if you want my year buy-in show me how you are listening to my input. It seems that your point is to vote with your wallet when this request feature hasn't gone anywhere in two years, so I have done exactly that and encourage anyone else to do the same.  Go download the Caltopo beta with Testflight and help make that app experience what this should be. Competition may just make the difference, as you pointed out.

I for one would still like this feature. I wish we could just mirror the iPhone. I used to jailbreak back in the day, but haven’t had a need for a while. Hmm.

Thanks in advance for all your help!

Fabulous on the CarPlay beta !!! It does work but I'd say from the basic standpoint. Doesn't appear to have any of the data bar for elevation etc. etc. - can't seem to put into always up orientation.

Need to play around more but great start !

I already played with it. I like the different map options. I could not get the routes to work. I have an iPhone 11 pro.

    Wish list:
    -Current elevation
-Zoom out more and look around the map, eg East, South etc.
    - add waypoint
Of course I have a lot more. But I think this is reasonable to start with.

Good work people. I have been waiting for this forever!!!!

Mapping and satellite imagery work really well. The beta is a little weak in on-screen controls. Making changes requires going to the phone app. That's not always convenient.

I have been testing the tracking in the car, and it is smooth and accurate. However, i'm having trouble making routes and also removing completed tracks from the screen.

great update , I am testing now . nice to see how fast these bug fixes are happening . I was about to report on the screen not following you after pressing + or -  but an update came through last night which fixed it .

would love to have rotating maps so direction of travel is up for carplay .

YES!!! I recently installed a CarPlay head unit in my Jeep and one of the deciding factors on doing that, was  the hope of Gaia releasing a CarPlay interface. I am so excited that this is happening! I only had a chance to drive around my neighborhood while using it tonight. I will second that direction of travel being up in CarPlay would be extremely helpful. I recorded my track around the neighborhood, it was nice to see the breadcrumb trail on the head unit display. We will be going out in the desert over Thanksgiving weekend, I can’t wait to try it out!

Direction of travel facing up and a few more on screen controls, and a display bar on the bottom with elevation, speed, etc. would be wonderful.

Thank you for a huge step in the right direction!

If you’re going to desert in Southern California, Arizona or Nevada be prepared for a severe storm. If only we could get weather on CarPlay.

well, the jeep navi has weather. it pops up every time you start the jeep.

it's largely worthless, and extremely annoying.

if you want excellent weather, get darksky on iphone.

you will get a notification about when the rain will start where you are located,

and it'll be accurate within about 5 minutes.

sunday morning, i will be in the mojave preserve. they are saying snow in ridgecrest.

everyone goes offroading on thanksgiving weekend. it's a thing. sunday afternoon,

i'm going home thru 29 palms. I15 from barstow to riverside will be a parking lot.

offroading, common sense will get you there and back. wet sand is excellent for

traction, calieche, not so much. clay is a bad day, no matter what you are driving.

warm clothes, a snatch strap, a folding shovel, water and a bit of food should be

in the vehicle at all times. dump in a can of fuel de icer tomorrow, so you burn out

the water in yours system before you park it in a freezing place overnight.

if you are going way off the beaten path alone, consider an inreach beacon.

enjoy your holiday weekend, with or without carplay.

Eric and Fulthrotl: Thank you for the concern. We will be camping about 15 minutes west of a small town in Arizona called Superior. It’s about 3000 feet in elevation, a few days ago the weather forecast called for snow. Now it’s just rain...  Would have been awesome to see snow in the desert! We will be on high ground and sleeping in a pop-up trailer with heat. we have plenty of survival and recovery gear. We are also pretty conservative when it comes to wheeling. I’m just glad to get out for a few days, rain or shine.

Fulthrotl: On your way home, say hello to Joshua Tree for me, I grew up there in there in the 70’s and 80’s. And thanks for the tip on Dark Sky, I’m checking it out right now.

You all have a great Thanksgiving and stay safe where ever you may be

Ok, maybe I am missing something or my headunit is lacking?   I have the beta Gaia app through TestFlight, but it doesn't show up in my head unit Carplay menu.   Am I missing a setting?

Mine is version 2020.1 updated on 11/25. It automatically showed up in carplay. You may have to add it in your settings. (Settings -> General -> Carplay -> pick your stereo under "my cars" -> Customize and see if it is in the include list.

Interesting that I don't see it as an option under those settings.   My Gaia version that is available in TestFlight is 2019.11.22

It's easiest to make a route in the browser version of GaiaGPS, but how do you copy it to the mobile (iPhone, in my case) version of GaiaGPS?

In the browser, Sync is turned on, but there doesn't appear to be a command to force or manually sync to mobile.

Any suggestions? What am I missing?

on the iPhone, push settings (bottom right gear) then account. you can see your last sync. If you havent synced lately, it could take a while. Recommend you plug your phone in and leave the app open. It is sometimes buggy for me. i have had to delete the app and reinstall it. Also, it seems that if you have a lot of maps/layers downloaded, they sometimes update and that could delay the sync.

I did some testing with carplay and my iPhone today and really like it so far.
