Send Periodic Text Updates To Designated People
I'd like to see a feature where a text message with your position, direction and speed would be sent to a designated person every 30-120 minutes; maybe with a link for the recipient to plot the position on a map. Allows family to keep track of where you are on a hike, and give your last known position to rescuers if you are overdue. Text messages require far less bandwidth and can often go out even when cell service is spotty.

Thanks for sharing your idea. The SPOT personal locator beacon might be a good option to check out.

Those are great, but at $150 - $300, a lot of hikers won't spend the money. Our SAR agency can usually triangulate a phone if it's on and in range, but if its dead or out of range for a while, a series of earlier texts gives us a decent Last Known Position to work with. And, it can let our families know where we are even with marginal cell service or if we don't have time to check in.
