How about support for what3words?
Are you affiliated with W3W? If not, what do you use it for @jim?
I am not associated with W3W. I just discovered their approach to coordinates via a recent New York Times article and really liked how it made sharing locations more memorable. I started adding the W3W phrases to some of my waypoints and then it occurred to me how easy it would be for your app do do it as an option.
I also think that what3words' approach is really helpful and intuitive, especially to non-techy non-geographers. It's being employed in more and more places around the world to do location-based services, like search and rescue, and even the postal service in Mongolia. Here's what their website says about integrating: https://what3words.com/business/emergency/
"It’s simple to integrate what3words into your existing software with just two lines of code. what3words is already accepted by Sopra Steria Storm, RapidDeploy, Airbox, Northgate and MIS."
Another great thing about their service (again for non-techies) is that it works in bunches of languages: "Addresses in unfamiliar languages can be hard to enter. what3words works in over 35 languages, so users can instantly switch a 3 word address from one language into another." (from https://what3words.com/business/navigation/).
Here's a link to their page about their public API. https://what3words.com/products/public-api/
Their own maps can work offline; that would be fantastic if that aspect could be integrated as well.
Last word: You guys are making the best app for navigation, and you obviously care a lot about getting it right. This is an added function that just makes sense.
Any further consideration for W3W support? Seems incredibly user friendly and useful but only if it catches on.
I think What3Words would be a terrific addition to Gaia GPS. It would enable, for example, meeting points with other people to be set with pinpoint accuracy. Should there be an emergency (and phone contact possible), it would make it easy to pinpoint location also.
Any word back from Gaia on w3w? At some point in time it seems like it may be a standard. Way easier and less likely to typo a location etc.. Hoping it gets adopted here.
I would love to see support for W3W added, it would make giving locations to viewers so much easier on YouTube.
+++ for this as a feature pls!
Yes, please work on integrating W3W into GAIA. This is a very handy system to allow not tech friends to find us with pin-point accuracy when were away from any cell signal. Thanks.
+ for integrating this feature. simpler system for people to share locational data.
A HUGE ++++++++++ from me as well. There are an increasing number of 'geographically challenged' people out there so what3words support in Gaia would save lives.
Yes Gaia, please add W3W its such a quick way to mark a location!
Another +1 from me. This would be helpful for finding specific places between google maps and Gaia.
FYI what3words is already available in AVENZA as one of their Unit of Measurement coordinates. Here you can buy maps, get free ones or upload your own maps to navigate with.
You can toggle directly back and forth between Decimal Degrees, USNG and what3words, for example. I'm playing around with it now, especially the voice control (versus typing the words), and I find it pretty accurate.
There is also a choice to "open view in Google maps", but it takes you to an enlarged version of the area you're in and does not convert the measurement to one that Google can use, (for example decimal degrees to get driving directions to the trail head).
GAIA PLEASE ADD THIS FEATURE!
