Crashes and other issues
Surprised to find how buggy this app is. Downloaded the trial and for three days poking around in it, I’ve spent a considerable amount of time fighting it. Crashes at least 5x a day. The search window frequently kicks me out. Also wonder why there isn’t robust support for paddlers- no choice for plotting routes. Looks like there are a lot of nice features but so what if it crashes? I was planning to get the premium membership but will wait to see if it gets more stable.

Like others have noted on this forum, I think it would be great to plot routes on waterways. The only options are Hiking, Cycling, Driving and straight line routes. I get how you can use straight line plotting for riversbut wouldn’t it be nice to have a paddling snap feature that follows rivers? I’m also trying to find paddling-focused maps in Gaia with campsites, ‘trails’, public access etc. I’ve found some of that with some of the available maps but none that really felt like I could plan paddling trips. I’ll still play with the app for biking and hiking but it’s just clunky for my kayak use.

We've actually got an internal feature request for paddling routing. That's a tricky addition because none of the major routing engine providers have the ability to route along waterways.
Nathan, our resident paddler, recommends US Topo as it includes river mile markers in some areas.
If there is a map that you prefer for paddling that isn't available in Gaia GPS yet, please let me know and I'd be happy to investigate if we can add it.

Take a look at caltopo.com. Click Add New Object -> Line. Then in the top right corner choose snap to "Hydro" from the drop down. It snaps to OSM water features, which if you have a river that is wider than a line or a lake, it will only snap to the edge/shore (which may or may not be a problem for you). While you're creating a route, you can toggle snap to between hydro and none if you want to paddle across the center of a lake...
You can the export the route as a gpx and import it to Gaia. I usually make my routes using CalTopo (sorry Gaia).
I always thought it would be cool if CalTopo and Gaia collaborated because Gaia does the app well and CalTopo does online mapping/map making well... I realize that's probably not feasible.
