Upvoted.  Tags would be a great organizational metaphor and could coexist with folders.  Concrete example would be to tag a waypoint by geographic location such as "Oregon" and "Mt. Hood" and also with something like "Favorite Campsites".  This gives me organization based on a place name hierarchy and experience level.

I totally agree.  Folders are ok, but tags would allow you to organize things much better.  It would also be nice to have permissions at the tag level.  Here's what I'd ultimately like to do:

Organize tracks, routes and waypoints by region.  This could be done with folders currently.   But I'd also like to be able to tag a subset of tracks, routes and waypoints within the folder, and share those but not the other items in the folder.  For example, if I tagged these subset of items with the Patreon tag I could get a sharable link that I could give to my Patreon supporters.

I have been doing a planning session for my planned camping and hikes for next season. In the process, I have really run up against a wall with folders that tags would solve. I have a dog and need to quickly identify whether or not a trail or camp allows pets. I have been using a kludgy combination of folders and icons to get this far. It works, but just barely. Tags, would allow me to do this more clearly and also cross reference more detailed information on the fly. Please, please, please tags please. Thanks for everything you do. Gaia is great in so many ways. This would just make it better.

    Please do this. Please. Please.

Folders require a single organizing dimension. Right now I use states. But within my home state, I have subfolders for campsites, hiking, overlanding, etc. But I also want to view say... all of my waypoints that are hot springs. Or all my waypoints that are an easy hike. Or tag my overlanding routes based on difficulty.

Tagging solves _so_ many problems I have organizing my data.

Folders were the wrong pattern to bet on. Executed properly, tags provide the flexibility of being used like folders in every way, plus the one enormous benefit of an object being able to exist in several "folders", i.e. tags, at the same time.

I understand that switching from folders to tags would be a monumental undertaking, but it would be the one that would make Gaia GPS blow everything else away. I love everything about Gaia other than its system and tools for organizing content.

I want to be able to organize, and toggle, my routes, tracks, waypoints, and maps using my own groupings. I only have 243 objects in Gaia, and it's already a pain in the ass to work with and keep organized. Tags and custom filters would solve every single pain point that many of us have.

I was wrong, I have 821 items. I see now that when I filter by All Items I'm not seeing any of the items which are in folders. I get why you guys did this, but it's very confusing. If I check every one of the filters except for one, I don't use areas so I left that unchecked, I get the true count.

Oh, wait, if I filter by folders I'm seeing a count of 822 items…what is that extra one item? I'm also only actually seeing 51 folders, while the count shows everything. Is the count supposed to reflect all the items that are on the map? No, because when I hide any of those items the count does not change. So I assume the count is showing me how many items are in the list below it, except that's not the case. Some of the folders are also nested in other folders, but this is not visually represented in the list. This all honestly feels so badly broken.

Please, for the love of GPS, do away with folders and implement tagging and custom filters. Please.

I agree and just going to add my use case as well. I create specific trips and sometimes those trips cross states. Sometimes I go and explore one state. I would love to use tags to tag a specific route, location, etc with the state, my trip name, or other things like “favorite”. Favorite is a good example, I don’t want to change the icon of something to like a “star” because I want the icon to be what it is but also would like to hide things that are not “favorites” of mine. Tags would allow me to do this.
