Creating a route always draws a direct/straight route. No longer switches between Car, bike, hike and bird

    Hi,

The routing engine uses OpenStreetMap data, which is the same data that maps like Gaia Topo and OpenHikingMap use. It is possible that the trail you are trying to follow doesn't exist on those maps, and that is why it is defaulting to a straight line instead.

It is possible to add trails to OpenStreetMap. Here is a blog post we wrote about that: http://blog.gaiagps.com/use-your-gps-tracks-to-update-openstreetmap/

If the trail does show on maps like Gaia Topo, but isn't working, please send me a link to that spot on the map and I can have a closer look.

    Hi,

I see the trail from Gaia Topo map but still getting straight line.

I have many examples but here I'm attaching as an example.

Please let me know how to fix it.

    Scot,

Thanks for linking me to that example.

I took a look at your route, and there is definitely some issue preventing it from snapping to the trail like it should. I've passed this along to our lead developer and will follow up with you as soon as I have an update!

    Hi Scot,

    Thanks for your patience!

We were able to fix the issue affecting your route.

To update your route - select Edit on the page you linked above.

Then, re-drag the points of the straight line segments onto the trail, and it will snap.

    Hi Ashli,

Thank you very much for your prompt follow up on this.

Yes, I just confirmed that the route I had problem with is not working properly without straight lines.

However, as I stated in my comment earlier, I have other routes that showed same issue but they are not fixed.

Please check the route below as an example where the straight line issue is not fixed.

    Hi Scott,

I'll ask the developers to take a look at that one as well.

FYI these issues are due to a recent change where we're now using our own server to do the trail-routing, because the 3rd party provider shut down - it's the same software, but we need to make a few additional tweaks.

    Hi Scott,

Thanks for your patience - I believe this is fixed now too! Make sure to delete and extraneous points, and the remaining ones should snap to the trail without issue.

My app used to follow me around. Track me all day on my dirtbike sometimes multiple rides in a day. Now it just shows a straight line. Just renewed my subscription and not happy at the moment thanks

    Hey Allen,

I'm sorry for the trouble with your track recordings.

Can you check that your phone's location settings are set to always allow the Gaia GPS app to access your location:

Email support@gaiagps.com if the issue continues to occur.

The problem with routes not snapping to a trail (straight lining and not following the trail) still happens some. For example, I can click on the Wenaha River Trail in SE Washington/NE Oregon in the Blue Mountains, and Gaia selects and highlights the whole trail. This indicates that Gaia is fully aware of the trail. But if I try to use the Route tool on the same trail, it will not snap to the trail. Snaps to roads around the area just fine, just not the trail. Doesn't seem to matter what map layer is being used.

It would be useful if a trail is in Gaia, and can be selected, then that could then generate a route, without manually having to build the route a point at a time.

    Hey @redskier44,

Sorry for the trouble. We had a hiccup with our snap-to-trail backend service yesterday but it should be all set now.

Please contact Support if you continue to have trouble: https://help.gaiagps.com/hc/en-us/requests/new
