Record, accumulate, and publish barometric elevation data
The iPhone 6 and later have barometers, as do some android devices. Due to the challenges of interpolating low resolution elevation data and GPS elevation inaccuracy, elevation gain/loss and profiles are often inaccurate, both for routes and tracks. I would love to be able to record barometric elevation as I travel and contribute that data towards some sort of open dataset akin to Strava's (https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/articles/115000024864-Announcing-Strava-s-Elevation-Basemap). I would expect this to be opt-in, as it likely would increase battery drain.

I like this idea. However I would also suggest that Gaia calculate ascent and descent using the barometric elevation. Also calculate a delta between GPS elevation and barometric elevation, and then build the elevation profile by starting with the GPS altitude but then using the barometric elevation with a delta applied to convert back to the GPS basis from that point on. The reason is because barometric elevation is more accurate from a relative sense and has less jitter. This would allow GAIA to remove the current smoothing they are using.
