Copyright/ Legality: Can I upload screen recordings of me using Gaia into a YouTube video?
Hi there! I have a question regarding copyright/legality question:
Can I upload screen recordings of me using Gaia into a YouTube video?
I make YouTube videos and would like to share my route planning strategies and expedition progress with my viewers. Is it possible to upload screen shots, screen recordings and maps that I create on Gaia into my YouTube videos?
Thanks!

I have the same question. It sure appears that a number of Vbloggers are doing this but I would like to know if it is ok.

Yes, you can use images, screenshots, and recordings from gaiagps.com provided the following:
1. You have permission or own the copyright to the data (i.e., the tracks, waypoints, etc. are yours or you have permission to use them).
2. You use Gaia Topo as the map source for your screenshots. It is based on OpenStreetMap data, so as long as you attribute both OSM and Gaia GPS, this should be fine. You can attribute the map by adding© Gaia GPS, © OpenStreetMap contributors
to the bottom corner of any map image. You cannot use other sources, you may only use Gaia Topo.
Please let me know if you have any other questions.Jim Margolis

Hi there, I just completed a 50 day hike and wanted to use in my content on YouTube a simple screenshot of a gaia map with each day section featuring the route from where l started & finished.
Yes the map source would display all Gaia copyrights, however l find the answer above to be rather ambiguous particularly regarding permission. Can you elaborate further on this permission? If l create a route, surely nobody can own the route or the track on the route?
Thanks Cam

Cam,
I am pretty sure what they are saying is that you can show tracks that you created on Gaia GPS but only if your base map is the Gaia Topo which is based off of an open source street map. The old government maps by the USGS and Forest Service maps should be fine too. Unfortunately, when I do route planning I prefer to use the National Geographic Trails Illustrated maps which is what my viewers would be most familiar with and are best the maps for the planning I do. The NatGeo maps would be off limits as they are copyrighted. I hope that helps.
