I'd like to download a map to my desktop from Gaiagps.com.  The only option I can figure out is to print a map.  Is there another way to do this?

You can save your maps as a PDF to your desktop by selecting the 'Save as PDF' instead of 'Print' on the print preview page. Click here for more information on printing and saved PDF maps from gaiagps.com.

I want to like the Gaia app, but the download function is simply ridiculous and downright close to useless.  The 10,000 tile limit must have been invented by a hiker who has never in his/her life taken a road trip.  Trying to plan a high-mileage trip using Gaia is pointless.

And the 160,000 tile limit on the main base layer.  WTF????

Today, I'm trying to load some local San Diego area maps.  I deleted all the maps from my road trip last month.  Zero maps saved.  I did the really stupid activity of setting a whole bunch of adjacent sub-10,000 tile maps to cover the San Diego area that I wanted.  All the downloads failed.

Then I deleted all the active-but-failed downloads, reduced my layers to a single layer, and selected a single download area that was less than 10,000 tiles.  No bueno.  I'm sitting at home with bazillion-speed internet and cannot download a single layer at under 10,000 tiles.

Seriously, Gaia, you need to fix this download nonsense.

I'm sorry you are having an issue downloading the offline maps you need for your road trip.

It sounds like you are just using the MapBox sources which have combined total download limit of 160,000 tiles. All of the other map sources do not have a limit on the total number of map tiles you can download.

Check out this article for more information on the download limits for each map source: Individual Offline Map Tile Limits.

I recommend trying an alternate map source like Gaia Topo to download large areas.

Please click "Submit a Request" above if you are still having trouble downloading maps for your trip.

    Hi @Nathan

Sorry, I must not have expressed myself well.  I am not over the 160,000 tile limit.  In the actions that I describe above, each time I fully deleted ALL saved maps before trying to download more.  On the second test that I describe, I started with zero saved tiles and tried to download less than 10K tiles.  It failed.  My comments are separable:

    1.  The 10K tile limit is ridiculous for anyone planning a long car trip.  They might work for hiking, but do not work for car trips.  Additionally, the 160K MapBox limit also doesn't work.

    2.  Working within those known limitations, I still cannot consistently get maps to download, even when I'm at home with very fast internet.

Thanks for clarifying - I understand your frustration.

Can you go ahead a send the activity logs to support so we can take a closer look? Also, please include the names of the offline maps that are not downloading.

    • open Gaia GPS > Settings > Other > Send Logs

Once you download maps, do they stay downloaded forever?  I downloaded the maps for a region where I like to hike, but when I returned a couple of years later,  the map was no longer on my phone.  Did I imagine this?  Please don't erase maps, even if they aren't used very often.

Ritchie, it will still be listed in your saved maps, but unfortunately it may not technically be there. I lost a lot of maps about a year ago when some changes went into effect. For example, some aerial maps were no longer available and the default "Gaia Topo" map was in its place.

I was able to re-download them, but unfortunately the updated maps were not the same (i.e. the aerial shots taken in the winter/spring were now shot in the summer, making them useless since everything was green from the foliage.) That's not Gaia's fault, but rather up to the map provider (Google, ESRI, etc.)

I wish that everything downloaded on my phone just stayed that way...on MY phone. But this isn't the case these days when everything is in "the cloud". For example, if you use Amazon Prime Music, you can download a song...physically in the memory taking up 5mb on your phone...but Amazon can remove that any time they wish.

    Thanks, Markr6.

In my case, this turned out to be a bummer -- I was in the backcountry with no map and no internet connection.

It would be helpful if Gaia could provide customers with an option to keep maps downloaded.    Or if that's impossible, at least inform customers at the time of downloading of how long unused maps will remain on the phone.

I'm sorry there was an issue with your offline maps on your recent trip.

Once offline maps finish downloading to your device, they should be available for use anywhere regardless of your connection status. Offline maps should only be removed from your device when they are deleted from the Saved menu or the app is deleted.

To check your maps are still available:

    • Check your maps are still saved in the Saved folder under 'Maps' by following these steps for Android or iOS.
    • Then follow these steps to verify the maps is downloaded (Andoird/iOS).

Thanks, Nathan.  It sounds like GaiaGPS is doing exactly what it should, and my experience was simply a case of user error.

    Hi,

I am a new member.  I have been unable to locate the topo maps for France. I have searched the menus and found the maps for other countries but none for France. Can you help me out?

    Thanks,

    Thanks for posting.
For France, I recommend trying out (click each link to see a preview):

You will find France IGN Topo in the map catalog under Premium Maps> Base Maps. Outdoors map and Gaia Topo are filed under Topo Maps.
