Frequently Asked Questions
Will I lose my tracks, routes, waypoints if my membership expires or I change membership levels?
Your tracks, routes, and waypoints are not tied to your membership level so you will not lose any data if you cancel or upgrade your membership.
What happens if my membership expires or lapses?You will automatically be switched over to the free membership level. You will continue to have access to Gaia Topo but all other map sources will be locked and you will no longer be able to access your downloaded maps or download any new maps. If you were a Premium member, map layering will also be locked.
What if my membership is not showing?
Most membership issues can be solved by verifying that you are logged into the app by following these steps:
- Open Gaia GPS > tap Settings > your email will be listed under "Account".
- If not, tap Account > Log In > Have an account? Sign in.
- If you don’t have a Gaia GPS account, create one by tapping "Start Exploring" and enter an email address and password.
- If you purchased your membership through the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store and you are logged in but your membership is still not showing up, tap the "Restore Purchases" button.
Can I use my membership on more than one device? Does my membership include my family?
Yes, you can absolutely use Gaia GPS on multiple devices and platforms with a single membership by logging in with the same account. Gaia GPS doesn't offer a family sharing plan, but you can use one membership on all of your phones by logging with the same email and password. When logged into the same account, your membership, tracks, routes, and maps will all sync between your phones.
How do I change my membership?
Find out how to change or cancel your membership here: How Do I Cancel or Change My Subscription?
Can I get a free trial?
We are currently offering an auto-converting trial experience through the iOS and Android Gaia GPS apps. If you would like to test out our membership features, you can enroll in the trial experience via the app; you will be converted into an auto-renewing annual subscription unless you actively cancel your your membership. For instructions on cancelling your subscription, please see: How Do I Cancel or Change My Subscription?
What happened to the standard Membership?
Prior to April 2021, we had two levels of annual subscription, Membership and Premium Membership. Now, you can only buy a Premium Membership or a Premium with Outside+ Membership.
- Access an extensive map catalog of over 50 base maps that span worldwide topo, road, and satellite maps.
- Download maps for offline use (note that downloading layered maps requires a Premium Membership)
- Print maps from gaiagps.com
If you currently have a Membership, nothing will change for you. You'll still be able to access the old Membership-level sources, download maps, and print.
If your Membership was set to renew automatically, it will continue to renew at the same price. If your Membership expired, it's not possible to renew at the Membership level, but you can upgrade to Premium Membership at a discount here.
Do I have to pay the full price to upgrade to Premium or can I pay the difference?
You will be charged a prorated amount if you decide to upgrade from a free account to either Premium or Premium with Outside+. The prorated total should display on the upgrade page: Gaia GPS Premium or Gaia GPS Premium with Outside+.
What does a Lifetime Legacy Membership include?
Lifetime Legacy is granted to users who purchased the app in 2017 or earlier when it was a one-time purchase. Lifetime Legacy is the same as the old standard Membership, except it does not include MapBox map sources (Satellite and Satellite with Labels), as those were added after the switch to the subscription model.
How do I know what membership I currently have?
To check what type of subscription you have and where you originally purchased it visit: https://www.gaiagps.com/user/subscriptions/.

Mykh,
It sounds like your phone is showing the price in CAD while the Gaia GPS website shows it in USD.
Premium is specific to the new Gaia GPS app on iOS.
Hi BC,
You can use your Membership on all of your devices. Just login to your account from the app on each device.
I originally bought the app outright but have been getting told by the app more and more often that I cant use map layers etc, and now I am having no luck at all and being constantly asked to sign in, and told I am not a member etc...
This is really bad... I am trekking the entire coast of the UK for charity and have been using the app to keep people updated with progress... Over a year and two months in to the challenge, this could be a disaster for the thousands of people following the fundraiser, and me too...
Please help
As soon as I purchased the$19.99 membership, I realized it wasn't going to work for what I needed it for with work. How do I go about getting a refund. Any help would be greatly appreciated
I purchased the Premium and paid the $40.00. I cannot access what I thought was premium privileges. Map overlays are restricted. Help please
Since I have been a long time user, when I loaded Gaiagps on my new iPhone I received a year or two of the new program free. A day later (this morning) I opted for yearly membership (19.95) but when I go to manage subscription, I only see the free time and do not see "membership" status.
@gaia
Thanks for the details on your past membership. I saw you also sent us an email and I will follow up with you there shortly.
Hi,
I purchased a subscription for 9.99/yr when I first downloaded the App. At the time I was using an iPhone. After a few months I switched over to Android, and my service including downloadable maps transferred to my new phone just fine.
But now, it has come time to renew. Map download stopped working, and I have received notices that billing for the 9.99 renewal has failed on the Apple store. Apple store had an old credit card on file, since I now use Android, that's why billing failed. Nonetheless, I updated the credit card on file, but can still not download maps after waiting several days for the re-billing to go through.
How can I continue service on the 9.99/yr plan I signed up for? I considered just signing up afresh on the Google Android store, but that says 19.99/yr and I don't want to double the price of my subscription.
@PeterMears
I'm sorry you had trouble using the new app. Since you purchased Gaia GPS in the past, you should have received a free Membership. I've sent you an email with more information about correcting that.
@Bill2435
Since your membership purchase was for the same level as the free trial, the Gaia GPS Membership you purchased will be stacked onto your free trial and will not be activated until your trial expires. Sorry for the confusion.
@hollartrees
If you purchased the Premium Membership in the app, please follow these steps to restore it:
If the Premium Membership was purchased through gaiagps.com, please click “Submit a Request” above and include a copy of your receipt.
@marg79928
Thanks for trying Gaia GPS, I'm sorry the app isn't going to work for you.
Since your membership is through iTunes, please follow these steps to request a refund: Refunding App Store Subscriptions.
How to cancel membership. I am willing to pay the premium change to get some maps for a hiking trip to France. But "auto-renew" that can not be cancelled except on one day before it expires is totally unacceptable. Is there a workaround?
@VarunV.Sadavarte
I'm sorry you are unable to download an offline map. I noticed you also submitted a request directly and I have followed up with you there.
I bought the app in Oct-2017. Now I can't download the map. When i bought I was told I was making one time payment to use app forever. Now it's not even one year complete. I am climbing tomorrow and now I realized I can't download map. This sucks.

We do not offer a lifetime Premium Membership option, but you can sign up for a 5-year Premium Membership here:
Looking for details on life premium membership cost
Hi David,
When you download the new app on iOS, it will automatically give you a free 2-year Membership.
The 2-years are at the standard Member level, so if you'd like to upgrade to Premium, you can do that here: http://www.gaiagps.com/premium/
You'll be able to use the same membership on all of your devices too by logging into your account.
I purchased the 19.99 membership but I have been looking into it and using it a little I want to upgrade but do I have to pay the 39.99 or do I get to upgrade for 20?
@infernorodz
Thanks for posting, I saw you sent us an email too and my coworker Chirs has followed up with you there about how to upgrade.
I paid $19.99 back in 2016 for the app. I think it is not OK for them to ask me to pay for a membership now
@NoelTavan
Since you purchased the previous version of Gaia GPS, your account should have been automatically grandfathered into the new version of Gaia GPS. I apologize for the issue.
I have applied a lifetime Legacy Membership to your account. Log into the app with your Gaia GPS account and you will have the same level of access as you had before.
1st -- I don't understand how anyone on this thread knows pricing ... I can't find pricing anywhere. (Nice job folks!)
2nd-- the Pro membership is not even discussed with other membership forms.
3rd -- on my subscription page of my account, it won't tell me what I am being charged annually for my subscription.
Gaia is undoubtedly my favorite and most used app on my phone -- GRACIAS -- but this is seemingly unethical monitary stealth -- I have been looking to see how much I pay you for over fifteen minutes. This is unnecessary and concerning.
@bellyofthewhale
I'm sorry you're having trouble finding the info you need. It looks like my coworker Chris has followed up with you via email.
For future reference:
1. You can view pricing on the website here: https://gaiagps.com/web_discounts/
2. Gaia Pro was renamed Premium Membership and provides the same access to maps and features.
3. I'm sorry for the confusion on this - we are working to revamp the subscription page to make fees more clear.
So it looks like I've been with Gaia since late 2014 or early 2015 when I purchased the $19 version. It sounds like from one of the previous responses above I am probably grandfathered in as well. Do you have a matrix breakdown of what I still have access to and the capabilities compared to the new subscriptions? Sorry you probably sent out an email telling us but I don't remember seeing it. Just curious if I can still download maps for offline use. Thank you!! Looking forward to getting back on the trails
@Hondo
Thanks for posting.
Please click Submit Response above and we can make sure your account is set up correctly.

I bought my Gaia App in 2016 from Apple's store for $19.99. I thought I was buying the full package. I'm on tonight for the first time in quite a while (been using app offline) to download some new maps and it looks like now I need a subscription for full package? I thought I bought full access with my initial app purchase.
Please clarify......
Thanks for your help
@DJ
Since you purchased Gaia GPS in the past, your account should have automatically been grandfathered into a membership. I'm sorry if that did not happen!
I emailed you directly with steps on how to straighten out your account.
I bought the premium membership the other day hoping to get the offline maps feature on my iWatch 4 for some hiking. The watch Gaia app just always shows “disconnected” even though other iWatch apps are able to show their data. Not sure what else to try
@kfolken
The Gaia GPS app for the iWatch will need to communicate with your phone in order for it to work out in the field. Double check your phone's Bluetooth connection is toggled on and your iWatch is properly connected when using Gaia GPS.
Here's more information on using Gaia GPS on Apple Watch.
