How to navigate off-road using CarPlay?
It looks like CarPlay only provides access to Routes... and even then, only those marked as "Driving" routes will display. Problem is, when you select this mode while creating a route, it then only snaps to streets and roads. This defeats the very purpose of using Gaia in the first place because the route I want to follow isn't on streets or roads.
I tried creating a route that started on streets .. I then went onto trails.. and then back onto roads. It displays in CarPlay, and allows me to select it... but then displays an error "Invalid turn-by-turn directions for this route." Ugh. This is really frustrating because the existence of Gaia GPS on CarPlay was the whole reason I finally decided to drop $1500 to upgrade my car stereo (bought the Alpine Halo9). Now I realize I was tricked by Gaia .. they released the app even though it's largely useless to their primary audience. It was a self-serving move, and one that will leave a mark among their most adventurous customers.
Has anyone figured out a workaround until the Gaia team prioritizes this work? Am I stuck just using my iPhone?
Hopefully they prioritize this work soon; it's a big market.. guessing they haven't prioritized because they feel like they've already got as much business as they'll ever get (assumption: all overlanders hike... everyone who likes our app already has it.. therefore, we stand to gain nothing by investing in overlanding functionality on CarPlay). Huge mistake, IMO.. they have SO MUCH growth potential in this area.

To be clear, I’m not saying I need turn-by-turn instructions when navigating off-road… but I do need the route to be displayed on the map, and my location on that map. I will manually ensure I’m following the route. But.. right now, I don’t even have the option to do that because only on-road routes are possible to display in CarPlay.

Well you have answered my question. TopoMaps+ user since it’s inception in the late 80’s; trying this out for the CarPlay (TP+ has since brought CarPlay to the table).
Anyway, same problem building a route in the NF at the GC NorthRim. You can try , but the system routes you to the nearest asphalt road then down the road to the nearest forest access close to intended destination.

CarPlay integration is crap. I love Gaia but with my 5 year subscription coming due in a few months I am seriously re-evaluating its value. I like a more GIS type app and Gaia gives me plenty of tools to do things I enjoy doin. What is missing is the ability to use this in CarPlay in a useful way. Where are my layers? Where are my POIs? Where is all the power of Gaia which is what makes it useful and ahead of the pack?
