Items Not Staying in Folders

I have found that, often the folder organization is not properly copied to the Gaia website backup.
If it is a layered map download only one of the layers is assigned to the folder I assigned to the entire download.
I always have to go to the webpage listing to correct problems, not the app.
Also the webpage map list only uses the download name, does not identify the source of each layer.

    Clarification:

I organize items via the website platform, not the phone app.  This whack-a-mole problem occurs no matter how I organize the items:

    • via the main saved data list, selecting items and moving them to a folder;
    • via the items themselves, editing details and moving them to a folder;
    • via the database tables (for waypoints, tracks, routes, folders, etc.)

I've been experiencing this problem as well. Exceptionally frustrating. Setup my main folder structure so i had 4 folders at the top level with a few layers of depth. Came back the next day and my top level was polluted with routes/waypoints again...

I finally bought a paid subscription to gaia gps and then discovered this bug - it makes it basically useless, NONE of my waypoints stay in folders. I organized almost 2,000 waypoints, came back, and none of them were in the folders again. Figured maybe it was a fluke, organized a bunch again - same thing. Starting to wish I hadn't wasted my money.

Exact same experience here. Huge waste of time..

I am having the same issue, plus now when I try to refile items in folders, the folders function just doesn't work at all.  I agree it's very frustrating, as I had very organized data until Gaia dumped it all out.

I've had this problem with GAIA for years.  I thought I was doing something wrong.  I should have about a dozen folders, instead I have a dozen pages of waypoints, tracks, routes, folders etc.   It's a freakin mess.

Wow I'm amazed and so disappointed to discover this. Gaia PLEASE!!! Fix this!!

Your app functionality is hands down the best navigation tool out there.

Your file organization and folder structure are almost worthless.

I find that the items DO move to their respective folders when placed there, however, all files are always visible at all levels within the folder structure. So if you save a file to a folder right when you make it, you can look at "items" within that folder and your file will be there.

The problem is if you go back and try to organize the files on a browser it's an impossible mess. Every file and every folder is always visible within the top level structure, so you have to wade through every item you ever saved in order to find things and attempt to organize.

Upvote for this concern and Evan.Bouchier (comment above) summarizes the issues I'm seeing very well.

I'll add that the app is horrible for finding folders when trying to sort items into folders.

    So any resolution to this?

As previously stated, items moved into folders do appear in the folders, yet also stay on the main SAVED ITEMS level.  You can apply a filter to just show main level folders, thus removing the clutter.  But then you're left wondering if the items filtered  from the main level are only on that level or if they're also within a folder.  The only way to know is to review the contents of the folders.

Refreshing the screen by changing from SAVED ITEMs to, say, UPLOAD, then returning to SAVED ITEMS seems to return things to normal, although temporarily.

What's confusing is when you select SHOW ALL under the SAVED ITEMS filters, it shows individual items but only those on the main level, not items within the folders.  How can an item sit on the main level and also be in a folder?

There's something about these saved items on the main level that anchors them to the main level.  When an item is saved from the app direct to a specific folder the web version shows the item properly stored and does not (initially) appear on the SAVED ITEMS main level.

This does appear to be an exclusive Gaia handicap.

Same issue here ... however it works fine on my phone and ipad. Everything is in there proper folders etc. Just on my desktop (PC Windows 10 and Chrome) all the folders are "individually listed" and not organized. So I have like 1300 folders and it takes forever to load. PC web app is useless. I will try with different browsers and update you. (Works on my iMac however).

I've had the exact same problem as everyone above for the past 2 years!  The "whack-a-mole" description describes this situation perfectly.  Gaia GPS, are you even listening to your customers?

A trouble ticket has now been opened on this issue: ticket reference number 964095.

Update from Gaia CS on ticket 964095:

    "Hi there,

Thanks for using Gaia GPS, and I'm sorry for the trouble.

I appreciate you bringing this to our attention. I have an open bug report for this issue and we’re continuing to track it in our system, but unfortunately, don’t have an ETA on when you can expect a fix.

I'm sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. Please let me know if I can help with anything else in the meantime.

Jules | Gaia GPS Customer Success
    Outside Inc. Team"

On October 25, 2022, over a year ago, Jay from "Gaia GPS Customer Success" said the following:

"Sorry for the trouble you are experiencing with filing your items to Folders. It sounds like you are experiencing a bug that our Engineers are currently working on."

So they've been aware of this and "working on it" for quite some time and "unfortunately, don’t have an ETA" .

    Here's Gaia's response to nicknotom's input a/o 12/27/23:

"I have flagged this for our backend team to review, and I will let you know if I receive any updates to share. "

Hopefully the flag color is red.

It's now Feb 2025 and I'm STILL EXPERIENCING THE MAJOR FOLDER ISSUE THAT'S BEEN DESCRIBED IN THIS THREAD FOR THE PAST 3+ YEARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is pathetic. Seems like the folks at Gaia want us to end our subscription and switch to On X Offroad.

  • eburkemper

Gaia just increases their subscription costs, doesn't listen to their customers and don't fix what should be a simple folder structure system. I cancelled my subscription, $60 is ridiculous, even if they were taking action to fix issues expressed by their customers.

Checking in 2 years after my last post.

At this point GAIA is probably driving more subscribers to OnX than OnX’s own marketing is. I’m one of them.

Good luck to the rest of you!

I had that issue once in a while with a few items, but now got it on a large scale. Seems I have more than 2000 items that were sorted in folders/sub folders and are now back in the root / main folder.

    This is really bad

I've been using Gaia for a dozen years and problems seem to be getting worse. What everyone has said about whack-a-mole: super frustrating! In addition, items will disappear from a map after the download has been confirmed (perhaps they are moving to another folder). I've resisted OnX, but it may be time to do some homework in that direction.

After numerous user issues on this topic over the past 3 years, still radio silence from Gaia. File storage infrastructure and associated management are fundamental basics of any software system. Now, the supposed feature of opening the Details Page for a folder or item in a folder and uploading one or more images using Add Photos no longer works. I get the confirmation that the photos were uploaded, but they never appear ANYWHERE in the folder infrastructure, not even the root folder. This is beyond pathetic.

I am seeing this less often, but have been waiting for word that it's fully fixed before investing the time to clean up all the mess this defect created.

Is there a representative of Gaia here that can tell if where they stand on resolving this?

if you have the issue I think it's important you contact Gaia directly and let them know about the issue; in other words open a support ticket.

I'm guessing (hoping) that if they get many direct complaints / reports from multiple customers this might push them to investigate and fix it. They don't seem to be very active on the forums to reply.

My trouble ticket number 964095 established a year ago remains open with no follow-up from Gaia.
