Current speed keeps dropping to "0.0" while still moving
Hi everyone,
I use the Gaia GPS app to measure boat speed while canoe paddling long distances - we went out for our first training paddle of the season and even though we were moving quite quickly, the "current speed" kept dropping to "0.0" ...which became quite frustrating because we rely on that measurement several times every minute while paddling. The app is running on a newer iPhone 12 mini, and everything else in the app, like distance, average speed, bearing, track, etc, all keep being recorded accurately, but the current speed keeps dropping to "0.0" while recording a trip.
I tried just about everything, from finishing the trip, to closing the app (and closing it from the background along with all other apps), to turning off the phone and restarting it several times. Every time we began a new trip, the current speed would display accurately for just a few minutes, and then drop to 0.0 again.
I eventually got so frustrated with it that I just left it alone while we paddled, and noticed (randomly, maybe every 10'ish minutes or so), the current speed shown would momentarily rise up to our actual speed for just a few seconds, and then go back down to 0.0, gradually rising/ falling, like... "0.0km/h, 2.1km/h, 3.6km/h, 5.2km/h, 7.3km/h, 4.1km/h, 1.1km/h, 0.0km/h".
I've used the app for the past couple of years without issue on an older iPhone 8 that I sold. This was my first time running the app on my newer iPhone 12 mini that I purchased brand new a few months ago... so if anything, I was expecting better GPS accuracy and performance on a newer phone.
Is this a known bug? Has anyone else encountered this issue? I hope it's fixed soon because we have a long distance 150km race coming up, and I've relied on the app in past years to give us accurate current speeds.
Thanks!

I have a somewhat similar issue with "Moving Speed". I kayak fish and sail in the Monterey Bay, where my speed typically varies from barely moving to 6-8mph, with rare short bursts up to a max of about 10mph. The moving speed feature is totally useless, as it tends to be practically frozen at 1.5mph or so, regardless of how fast or slow I'm actually moving. It'll sometime move up or to 1.8-2mph or down to a bit under 1mph, but it's almost always way out of sync with my actual moving speed.
At the other extreme, I tested it in my car. Going 60mph, it would take a while to get to 55 or so, then ever-so-slowly inch towards 60. But then when I slowed down, it would take forever before it reduced to anything remotely similar to my actual speed.
I have an iPhone 12, and I'd say that the moving speed feature is badly broken. That's a pity, as it's something that I need to measure. If nobody at gaia-gpa is going to do anything about it (as seems to be the case, based on the lack of response to this thread), I'll be looking for another app...

I'm hoping someone from Gaia will chime in here, as I've been wanting to use the app for this purpose (monitoring and recording current speed while paddling). If this doesn't work accurately, I suppose I'll have to buy a Garmin quatix watch (but I'd prefer not to spend that kind of money!).
