App ALWAYS Frozen

Super frustrating! I lead a lot of hikes and backpacking. I’ve been using Gaia GPS since 2015. This past year, the App is always frozen as I’m starting my hike. Most of time, I can’t even start it which I am paying monthly to use. I have recently ended up using other free GPS app to track my hikes. Downloading routes and maps also have been taking forever. Then I get to trailhead, and the route has not downloaded. Am I doing something wrong? Is there a better way to do this? I loved Gaia GPS when it’s working. I am at the verge of ending my subscription.
