    I received an answer from tech support and it appears to have worked.  Here is the answer I got:

     

    Hi there,

    Thanks for using Gaia GPS and for reaching out.

    Sorry for the trouble you experienced with your recent track recording.

    This issue is related to the latest iOS update.

    Can you please try the following:

    1) Set your Location Service to Always: Gaia GPS isn't locating me. How do I adjust iOS location services?

    • Go to Settings App > Privacy > Location Services
    • Set Gaia GPS access to Never and quit the Settings App
    • Then relaunch Settings and turn it back to Always

    2) Turn your phone on and off a couple of times. This will delete any GPS errors that may have accumulated in your phone's GPS chip.
    3) Make sure your phone is not in "Low Power Mode."

    • iPhone Settings App > Battery > Low Power Mode = OFF
