Track started flying

I did a short walk to the river from my house yesterday. Suddenly the track heads in a straight line to the NE, a far away area was marked ("Recorded in Sauvie Wildlife Area" - WRONG), and my track shows that I descended 20,000 feet. What happened?

  This can happen occasionally if your phone grabs a stray GPS point. Usually, the app will filter these out, but occasionally you'll see this happen. 
  
  To reduce the chances of this, make sure Gaia GPS has permission to use your location while in the background.
