How to fill in a missing track section on out-and-back hike
AnsweredI recently went on an out-and-back hike. On the OUT portion of the hike, I put my iphone GAIAGPS app on PAUSE during a break and forgot to tap RESUME afterwards. I discovered this about 0.6 miles further and RESUMED at that point.
On the way back, the app recorded track points along this section (in reverse from what would have been the OUT portion). Question is: what is the best way to take the track points on this section from my return trip, flip them around and insert them in the missing section of outgoing points?
My first attempt was to export the track into a text editor, then find and copy the 158 points on that stretch of trail from the RETURN trip to a second text file. Then I 1) meticulously flipped around the points so the last was first, 2) changed the times on each point to be reasonable for the outbound hike, and 3) moved the longitude for each point slightly eastward (so the out and back would not overlap).
Then I merged the new 158 track points back into the original file at the correct point (between the PAUSE and the RESUME), renamed the complete file, saved it and tried to import it into the app. Nothing happened.
What did I do wrong? Is there an easier way to do this? Will I loose the connection to the pictures I took along the way using the app (way points)? On the second text file (the one with the adjusted missing 158 track points, can I copy the header and footer GPS tags from the original file, rename the track in the <name> tag, save it under a new name, then MERGE the two tracks? Would that work?
Thanks,
Phil

Hey phil_mccul,
Thanks for posting - I believe I got back to you via email about this issue.
For other folks trying to fix/edit sections of their tracks, I recommend exporting the track as a GPX file and using http://gpxeditor.co.uk to make any changes you need.
Email us at support@gaiagps.com if you have any questions.0
