Creating road trip destinations

Hello. Does anyone use GAIA like Google Maps for road trips? Or is that not the point of GAIA? When I tried this, GAIA sent me to Google Maps, but then I didn't see a way to bring my work back into GAIA. Trying to create a route or waypoints requires me to click on the map while I need instead to enter the destination in search and drop a pin at the location. Or should I give up on this and use GAIA for trail use only?
