Distance/Ascent differences between device apps
Not necessary a Gaia GPS question, but wonder if others have encountered this and if there's any workaround or explanation,
When I hike, I'll use Gaia GPS on my iPhone 7 to track progress. I also have a Apple Watch, and will use Apple Workout > Hiking to keep track of progress. I've noticed that sometimes the difference between the apps for distance and ascent be a lot. For instance, Gaia GPS is reporting a 7.8 mile, 2800' ascent. This pretty much matches the trail descriptions found elsewhere. However, the Apple Workouts app reports an 8.8 mile, 3,050' ascent. When I export the Apple Workout track and bring it into Gaia GPS, it much closer to the iPhone, 7.6 miles, 2800' ascent.
Even stranger, is the exact same thing used to happen with my Garmin Watch. It was consistently about 10% higher than it should be. But when I export the track and import into Gaia GPS it would match the phone and trail descriptions.
I expect to have some variation, but this seems more than what it should be. Any ideas?

Thanks for posting.
When calculating stats, Gaia GPS uses an algorithm and filter to account for inaccurate GPS points. Every program uses a different formula to deal with inaccurate GPS points when calculating stats - Gaia GPS is most likely filtering points more heavily than the Apple Workout app.1 -
Thanks!

I found out that when the Apple Watch and iPhone are calibrated (following instructions from https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204516), the gaiagps distance on the phone app is more or less the same as the apple workout (hike) distance.
And it seems that the gaiagps watch app uses the distance from apple workout distance. If you concurrently run gaiagps watch app and gaiagps phone app, the phone app may have a different distance from the watch app, and gaiagps watch app distance is equal to apple workout distance.
