The right hardware requirements for printing out maps

My club and I hike throughout the northeast region and I'm learning land nav. Since my printer just died, I have an opportunity to upgrade printers and even look at what works best for maps. I'll probably start downloading maps when I don't need hardcopy or I'm in a rush, and I'm considering a large format printer so I can use the scales on each map for land nav. What are the requires for printers in terms of the size format that typically works?
