Different devices need different data synced
I have an iPad with a large amount of space and an iPhone with much less.
It's not really practical to have large amounts of data sync to the phone, yet I can store entire state's worth of data for offline use on the iPad.
There need to be a way to have different data on different devices without entirely destroying the ability to sync (which is the only workaround I have found so far.
By far the simplest answer would be the option to NOT SYNC DEVICE CREATED DOWNLOADS. Simple, and in fact intuitive. Could be optional in preferences. When I was first experimenting, and I put several tracks on both devices, then decided to download a large block on my iPad, I was in fact shocked to discover my phone ran out of space. It makes no sense to "download maps for offline use" and then sync that download.
Please fit this, we need a way to manage separate devices separately. The whole "turn off sync and archive" dance is not workable and VERY confusing and unintuitive

Excellent idea. I have the same problem. I use my Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 tablet as my primary navigation device, but occasionally I don't have it with me, so I use my Cat S60 phone for simple local tasks. But, it tries to download all of the maps I have on the tablet. A way to only selectively synch individual maps would be an a great feature.

I purchased a Samsung Tab S6 with a large SD card specifically for using with Gaia and to download a lot of offline maps. I I find it very frustrating that when I turn off sync that my data is deleted from the ap. Can an option be added to delete/not delete data from the device when sync is turned off. I only have cell connection - no wifi. Sometimes when I am low on bandwidth or in an area when the service is slow, I would like to turn off synching but not remove the data (which requires me to redownload it all - defeating my main purpose of conserving bandwidth). I like scottfrey suggestion as well. If I create it on a device - then don't delete it when sync is turned off. Also - just turning off sync on the device doesnt help me. I still want to be able to sync some maps - in the area where I am traveling, but not all maps. I hope this option is added soon!

@srheid,
Map downloads take up by far the most space of an account's saved, syncing data.
This article will show you how to manage your map downloads separately from the rest of your data (tracks, waypoints, etc.)If you have any further questions, please contact Support here.

So if I understand this, I can leave sync turned on for all my maps on the server and turn off Auto-resume on my devices. Then I can select which maps to add to my device and they will never be deleted unless I choose to delete it from the device. Is that correct? With Auto-resume off, and sync on, will the map be deleted from my device if I delete if from the server? With this option will I be able to maintain my Caltopo maps that I have already down loaded even when the license goes away in January?

@shried, I've replied to your questions inline below:

- Mostly correct. Everything you stated is correct except "from the device". Maps will be removed from your device if you (1) delete the map in the app, (2) delete the map from the web, or (3) turn off sync on the web.
With Auto-resume off, and sync on, will the map be deleted from my device if I delete it from the server?- Yes.

Yes. But auto-resume isn't necessary. You will still have all your downloaded Caltopo maps come January. You can sync them, archive them, everything you can do with a downloaded map. You will only lose the option to download more maps from CalTopo sources.
- But we are working on a replacement source for the USGS Caltopo Map. This map layer is being sourced from the same USGS data so you may not even notice a difference between it and Caltopo's.
