External Antenna question
Apologies if this has already been discussed. Hoping someone here has a definitive answer. I am replacing a head unit in my 08 FJ cruiser with one (most likely a Kenwood or Pioneer model) that has the capability of plugging in an external GPS antenna. The unit its self will not have built in navigation, but will have CarPlay which will allow me to use Gaia and downloaded maps. The question is will the iPhone actually use the external antenna or will it just rely on its internal GPS antenna?

According to the Apple Forums, CarPlay (to my surprise) uses the vehicle’s GPS signal.

Using an external GPS antenna can improve the accuracy of location services, especially in areas with poor signal reception.

Your iPhone will almost certainly not use the external GPS antenna connected to your aftermarket head unit. It will rely on its own internal GPS hardware for location data.
