Elevation Data Missing

Same here, for over two days now. I assume they're having issues with the elevation algorithm/program and everyone is off for the holiday. I wrote Gaia support yesterday and got this unhelpful reply that seems like a canned response and doesn't address the actual issue. Seriously considering switching to Caltopo or OnX at this point. I only see Gaia heading more and more downhill.

We've seen a few reports of routes displaying unexpected elevation stats.

We're looking into this more and we plan to update our algorithm so that it produces more expected elevation stats in situations like this one.

An elevation algorithm can spit out vastly different results based on how often you sample the points. For a mountainous track that has continuously undulating ups and downs, it's possible to get widely different elevations calculated, depending on how frequently you want to sample the points. It will be much higher if you include every tiny up and down. If you under-sample, peaks and valleys may get cut off, and the elevation will be too low.

We think the trick is finding the middle ground between what people expect to see and what is most accurate.

Unfortunately, I don't have an ETA on when you can expect this update to happen, but we are working on it.

Just noticed this happening too and a search led me here.  WTF, this is a critical piece of information for backcountry tours.  My typical use is just tapping a point where I want to go to see the elevation, now it always just displays 0 ft.  It is completely unrelated to that canned response.  It DOES appear that this is an issue on their end.  I just switched my phone into airplane mode and fortunately it DOES display the correct elevation for a marked point in that case, based on previously downloaded map data.  Not sure if it would work properly for offline data gathered now while this issue is present...

    Having the same problem

I discovered the same problem a couple days ago.  Following along here to see if there's a fix.  I noticed it's inconsistent.  I just created a new route an hour ago (on the website) that had correct elevation data.  But created a waypoint just now and the elevation is zero.

I'm glad it's not just me, and I'm hopeful it will get fixed soon.  I, too, noticed that it was inconsistent/intermittent when it first showed up for me, but when I made the original post, it was always not working.  The only inconsistency at that point was that sometimes the elevation would display as "0" and sometimes as "...".

Predictably, got a reply this morning that they were working on it, and it seems to be fixed now. I can't get the elevation profiles to update on the routes I drew during the outage, but new ones are working.

I am all for folks taking time off, but an outage of this severity and length on a product that people rely on for backcountry navigation is not ok. It reveals a critical lack of resourcing and failsafes for this product. Speaks volumes about Gaia's future. :/

Alright!  It's working now.  Thanks, Gaia team.

Yep, seems to be working now.

    Regarding this:

an outage of this severity and length on a product that people rely on for backcountry navigation is not ok

I agree that this was a Really Bad™ thing to just randomly start happening on a holiday, and it is concerning about product stability.  But, it WAS actually working fine when in airplane mode and using previously downloaded offline maps, which is presumably what you'd be relying on in a "real" backcountry navigation situation.  Which is why it seems like it was an issue on their (the server) end, since when there's no data connection it's not trying to talk to the server.

Agreed, not likely to have caused any actual ill effects for folks already out there. Glad I wasn't trying to download maps/routes for a trip starting anytime within the last few days though.

Yep, totally!  Like you I hope this isn't a sign of things to come, but this kind of random problem is concerning.

Contour lines on metric maps are (still) missing. Looks like it might be related to this topic here.

Elevation data can be so crucial for planning and navigation.
