What is the number on the GAIA icon and how do I get rid of it?

  This is a notification, likely because one of your map layers has an update. You can open the app, find the notification, and clear it in the app (such as updating the map layer driving the notification) or you can disable notifications if you don’t want them in the future.   Specifically your screenshot is what’s called a “badge notification.”

  thank you for the thoughtfull answer.  When viewing every control in the GaiaGPS app I cannot find anything that refers to notifications.

  Try turning off the notifications in your android settings and not within GAIA settings. The link I provided was general android notifications which is what I think you need to turn off notifications for the app.

  I discovered what the number means on the Icon.  If there is a filter selected in the Saved items, GAIAGPS will present a "1" next to its icon.  No matter the number of items selected to display, it will always show a "1".  Just another of the many things that makes no sense in GAIAGPS.
