Altitude underestimation on imported .gpx files
Hello!
Most of the time, I use an external GPS tracking device that logs points every 1 minute (whereas I understand the GAIA app itself logs points every few seconds depending on circumstances). Upon importing the .gpx file into GAIA the cumulative ascent is highly underestimated. It's my understanding that GAIA smooths out or averages out tracking points which might cause this? Is there a way to bypass this smoothing/filtering with imported track files so that I have true ascent data?

Hi Jóhann,
We've seen a few reports of imported tracks displaying unexpected elevation stats.
We're looking into this more and we plan to update our algorithm so that it produces more expected elevation stats in situations like this one. It is not possible to bypass the smoothing algorithm when importing tracks.
In your case, I would expect an underestimated cumulative ascent with such a wide sampling interval of 1x/minute. That being said, I'd be happy to take a closer look at your gpx files.
It's possible that using the elevation lookup will improve this statistic for you: Elevation Lookup in iOS1
