Managing Data is a Disaster?
Hi all,
I am relatively new to GaiaGPS and so far I find that managing my data is horrific. Can anyone tell me of a video or article that explains best practices for uncluttering the data on the map, archiving and unarchiving, folder management and anything else that might help. All I can find so far on the Gaia help pages and manual is isolated explanations of functions. What are the strategies for using them? Do I need to reinvent the wheel?

Hi Mike -
Talking about the gaiagps web version here, but mobile versions have similar feature:
a quick tip to unclutter would be to use the "View Map Overlays" button on the top left. You can choose to only display waypoints or tracks etc or any combination
secondly, you can turn any item or folder visible or invisible on the map. Due to the sloppy implementation, you may or may not see the map actually update (a full cmd-r to refresh usually does it)
You can also stash things like routes, tracks and waypoints in folders. But be warned: the web version of GaiaGPS is hopelessly buggy and will eventually corrupt your folder structure to the point of unrepairability. My suggestion is to save everything regularly as gpx files and use your Mac/Win file system as a the storage system of record. You cannot trust GaiaGPS to do it.
So yeah, go ahead and reinvent that wheel. Sigh.
The web version is poorly designed and amateurishly implemented (whoever coded it didnt know about transactions, database consistency or other CS 101 topics and thus we are left with code that eats your data.) I think there are only a few if any people working on the web app, and perhaps they are more focused on adding features rather than fixing fundamental implementation problems, so I do not think this situation will change.

Gaia staff, you are invited to weigh in.

It would be a great help to everyone if gaia would show a simple manipulable folder structure, like every OS does.

Well, thanks to this thread, I know I'm hosed. I imported a folder with 1000 items in it. I soon discovered it wasn't syncing properly. I deleted it and it dumped everything into the root folder. Good grief...
