I got Gaia mainly for ADVriding!

Gaia has recently come out with the "Gaia Overland" map layer. For the areas I ride, mainly USFS in the Pacific NW, it is pretty good. I do have a paid version. It shows more detail as you zoom in, but highlights major roads when zoomed out. Perfect for route planning.

The MVUM are OK but don't have much info EXCEPT the actual roads and trails.

I also use the "Public Land" layer in our RV to identify dispersed camping possibilities.

I use it for Dual Sport riding not so much ADV stuff. I find USFS 2016 Map to be very helpful. Shows lots of roads that the MVUM does not. The Gaia Topo is really good too. I don't think they have anything (other than the Gaia Overland) specific to ADV riding. The Gaia maps are way better than the stuff the big GPS company (starts with Gar...) has. Much more types available and better detail. Try some out. See which ones work best for you. I'm running Gaia on a Kyocera Duraforce Ultra 5G

    Thanks @88jmartin88.

Looking at the USFS 2016 legend, would you say that the following are suitable for big bike (ADV) riding?

    • Road, Gravel
    • Road, Dirt
    • Unimproved

I imagine the other road types are that suitable for ADVs.

"Road, Gravel" and "Road, Dirt" are fine for a big adventure bike. There may be sections of "Unimproved" that are ok, but they can go from easy to extremely difficult (even on a small bike). Be smart. Don't go down any road, that you may not be able to get back up.

This is my main use for Gaia, did you get anything figured out?
