Route not snapping to available trail despite it being on hiking mode

Hi there. I am new to Gaia maps and am following a tutorial to get familiar with the app. I am trying to create a route. The first section of the route there is not an existing trail, but it does get to a point where it meets an existing trail, however the map is not snapping to that trail and still just follows a straight line to the summit, despite being on hiking mode and setting the activity for that route to hiking.
