Apple CarPlay is a mess with Gaia GPS
I post this knowing that Gaia GPS is unsupported software but in case a future owner wants to restructure the app I discovered this nasty bug.
While driving down the freeway I plugged my iPhone into my van and selected the Gaia app. The map on the screen for the van had the north up orientation (like a paper map) and the blue triangle for the current position following the van as we drove south and eventually slipped off the map completely.
At the same time app as shown on my phone showed the same triangle spun around so my van appeared to be sliding backwards down the freeway — at an angle.
I was using the track up orientation (the road or trail I am about to traverse is just ahead of the position indicator.
I look forward to a day when Gaia tests its app before releasing it to beta testers, or the public. A lot of simple and obvious problems could be resolved if they cared.

You can select your CarPlay screen then tap on the display arrow to
change how N is displayed and following your progress. At least that is how
it works on my 2019 Ranger. The display on your phone and CarPlay are
different on this. Also the scale is independent in CarPlay. CarPlay works fine
with this and the iPhone. It pays to experiment with displays.

I’m saying the displays should match.

I have used CarPlay with Gaia for some time and the display has always
differed from that on the phone. But once set up it will remember the settings.
And it is very easy to set up. It is not a flaw with CarPlay, but mostly
because of accommodating the size difference of the two displays0 -
How does one set up CarPlay and the phone to show the same orientation at the same time?

Tap the CarPlay screen which will display plus/minus on the screen to set
map scale. Tap the direction arrow on the screen to set it to center and keep
the display on screen.
If you still have trouble make sure your van sync software is up to date
as has varied with updates. Both my 2019 Ranger and our Escape are current and behave
as I describe.0
