I just bought the old classic version and now see I can get a 2 year free new version. Do I need to download the new version and will I not be charged? Also do I need to open an account first.

You can download the new version directly from the app store.
It is the version of Gaia GPS with the gold border app icon.
It is a separate app, and it won't replace the current one on your phone.
When you download the new app, you'll want to create an account if you don't have one already. Once you're logged in, it will be able to gift you a free 2-year Membership.
