vastly different distances on same route
Hi. Last week, my friend and I went on a 10.5 mile hike (per the "official statistics"). We both used Gaia on our phones (iPhones 6 and 7 respectively). However, our trips statistics were vastly different. I came out at about 10.5 mi and his phone said 16 miles. That seems quite a large difference for the same hike. When we compared our trip profiles, his trip looked significantly more "squiggly." Any idea why this might be the case? I've uploaded a screenshot of part of the trip (I'm in green and his is in purple".
The only difference was that I downloaded the map and turned my phone on airplane mode prior to starting the hike and

he didn't.

Hi,
For the person with the longer track, try restarting the device. That usually cleans up any GPS issues.

I like Gaia GPS in the map context... but I have a similar problem using my iphone app, distances and height levels are quite wrong, that when i compare using other apps for the same route at the same time and also comparing to a GPS. Stats in this sense does'nt look trustable, and we talk about more tyhan 10% difference.

@TuròTrek
GPS apps use different algorithms to calculate distance and elevation changes while recording a track and we are always looking to improve how Gaia GPS performs. Can you send a copy of your track along with the name of the apps you compared to support@gaiagps.com?0 -
I think this is to be expected when using any GPS app. When the phone loses gps connectivity to the satellite, the distances are inaccurate. My distances have been up to 1.5 miles off what the book says it should be.
